“The consistency and the choices you make in your life feed into the consistency of your performance.” – Jake Lyon

Jake Lyon is a former professional Overwatch player for the Houston Outlaws and now a caster and live commentator for the League.

We cover a lot of great topics, specifically around consistency being the key separator between aspiring pros and professionals with both their practice and gameplay, team dynamics, and what it means to be a great team player.

Rapid-fire questions (27:34)

Consistency matters and our actions lead us towards an outcome based on those choices. Yet, sometimes we try to dial everything up thinking that it will lead to better outcomes. That is not always the case and most times lead to a decrease in overall performance due to being spread too thin.

Wondering how to stay consistent with your gaming performance goals?

Try the dial method.

Think of your overall performance like a dial that goes from 1 – 10.

You may want to dial-up or dial down specific areas, but never turn them off completely in order to maintain a certain level of growth.

If you were to dial it up to “10”…

-What would your competitive outcomes look like?

-What would your practice look like?

-What would your health and wellness (nutrition, exercise, sleep) look like?

-What other actions/habits would you practice in that scenario?

If you were to dial it down to “1”…

-What would your competitive outcomes look like?

-What would your practice look like?

-What would your health and wellness (nutrition, exercise, sleep) look like?

-What other actions/habits would you practice in that scenario?

Take a moment to think about where you are at right now.

What behaviors need to be true to get you to “optimal” and maintain consistency in your training and performance outcomes?

My suggestions:

Build a foundation and understand your strengths and weaknesses both in-game and out of game.

  • In-Game
    • Mechanics
    • Game knowledge
    • Game sense
    • Communication/Teamwork
    • Tactical decision making
  • Out of game
    • Growth mindset
    • Healthy nutrition
    • Exercise and injury prevention
    • Sleep and recovery
    • Planning and preparation

How are you doing in these areas? Where are you excelling the most? Where are you lacking?

  • Pick 1-2 things in the areas you are lacking and pick ONE THING you can consistently take action on to optimize your abilities. Don’t overlook your lifestyle habits… nutrition, movement, and sleep are crucial. I’d start there… (soft nudge).
